YSEALI YOUnified

YSEALI YOUnified 2020

YOUnified is an annual community service initiative that celebrates YSEALI’s anniversary on December 3 and the power of YSEALI members to positively transform their communities across Southeast Asia. YOUnified combines the words YOUTH and UNIFIED to demonstrate YSEALI members’ ingenuity in developing solutions to local, national and regional challenges.

This year we are asking you to participate and celebrate the spirit of YSEALI through community service throughout the month of December.

These acts of volunteerism will benefit not only you but those around you. By giving goods, services, and time at no cost to those around you, you are strengthening your community and empowering yourself as a leader. Whether you are cleaning up a beach or painting a school, running a virtual program, you can make a difference. No act is too small.

Please remember that YOUnified activities should be safe and follow local laws and regulations in regard to your country’s COVID-19 situation and restrictions. Virtual events count as YOUnified events.

Participating in YOUnified
There are two ways to participate: you can volunteer at an event near you or you can organize your own.

YSEALI Theme: Civic Engagement
Description: A continuous effort to encourage our youth to embrace our simple traditional and cultural wear – sarong. The aim is to close the gap between the generations, between traditions, and empowering modern youth. In today’s lifestyle, fashion is no longer just for aesthetics and comfort. Fashion has come a long way to champion causes and highlighting messages for awareness. I personally have made it a point to wear the traditional sarong but in a more modern way every weekend – Saturday and Sunday – even for formal meetings and functions. I have started to personally use the hashtags #sarongsaturday and #sarongsunday whenever I post any photos and stories on social media during the weekend showing myself at any events. I would love to now share this publicly, and it would not be a one time off event but a continuous one.

Activity Name: Musicians, The Agent of Change in Society
YSEALI Theme: Education
Description: It is a tremendous appreciation for me because I was invited by YSEALI to hold an event to celebrate YSEALI’s birthday on 3 December 2020. In order to welcome the anniversary, I will hold a music event and discussion with young people with the theme “Musicians, The Agent of Change in Society”. As we know, the musician can be the agent of change in the world. Music can unite young people from different cultures. Music also has the power to culturally, morally, and emotionally influence our society. Thus, the more intentional we become with the sounds, messages, and moods we create and release through our music, the more powerful we will become in making deep positive impacts. Through music, we can be involved in conveying development messages to society. Because it is still during the Covid-19 period and social distancing restrictions, the music event that I will hold in the community is still adhering to health protocols. I am a young musician and can play the piano, guitar, violin, and digital drums. Some of my songs have been uploaded to my YouTube channel, Flemmo. My song entitled “Pesona Negeri” passed the national finalist nomination in the 2020 Jazz Song of Earth Festival held by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry – Bekraf Indonesia. I am the chairman of the Cross-Genre Musician Community in my area. I am also experienced in holding music events at schools and several cafes.

Activity Name: Great Banua
YSEALI Theme: Sustainable Development
Description: Here I would like to propose a social project called Great Banua. Great Banua has a philosophy that is to build a better children quality of knowledge and be aware of the conditions or circumstances related to SDGs. Great Banua is a volunteer activity where the activities provide 5 types of material related to several pillars in the SDGs including Zero Hunger (SDGs 2), Good Health and Well-Being (SDGs 3), Quality Education (SDGs 4), Clean Water and Sanitation (SDGs) 6))) and Climate Action (SDGs 13) for elementary school children in 2 villages, in South Kalimantan Province, Indonesia where the material presented will be obtained from the results of online volunteering. These two villages are Kunyit Village and Sungai Bakar Village, where in the Kunyit Village it will be implemented in 2 places, namely SDN Kunyit 2 (elementary school) and a reading house owned by Literasi Anak Banua organization. Meanwhile, the implementation in Sungai Bakar Village will work SDN Sungai Bakar (elementary school). The target number of the target of this activity is more than 50 children from the two villages. The target of volunteers who were gathered according to the existing pillars is 5 people online. However, we will also involve a team from Child Literacy Banua totaling 18 volunteers and there will be an additional 5 volunteers who will go directly to the target village and reading house. The background for the implementation of this activity itself is that children, especially in rural areas, often only pay attention to their academic conditions but forget about and do not get enough knowledge about the SDGs. This is a gap and why this activity is very important because with the existence of this activity it can increase the knowledge and abilities of children in several villages regarding the pillars of SDGs and apply their knowledge so SDGS problems in rural areas can be minimized. The provision of material will be carried out by online volunteers; Due to limited signal and internet accessibility, online volunteers will make recordings of the presentation of the material given. The provision of this material will be carried out by offline volunteers by using laptop and projector media so that later the concept will be like giving a movie. During the activity the children would receive ice breaking and later the children were required to write what the online volunteer who gave the material said. On the other hand, children will also be asked questions about the material presented in an interesting way. Activities in each place of implementation should take between 3-5 hours in 3 different days. On the other hand, the target school applies the conceptual offline learning because of limited signals and activities will be carried out in schools and in reading houses owned by the Literasi Anak Banua organization. The main target is 50 children, but later the existing material can be reused to have a bigger impact and the target of 50 children is the minimum target to be achieved.

Description: How do you SUNGAI? is an photo-crowdsourcing initiative under R for River, a river awareness campaign powered Han and Shin, the alumni of YSEALI Boot Camp 2020. From 3 to 31 December this year, we invite fellow Malaysians to show our love for our Malaysian rivers by answering “how do you SUNGAI?” via photos posting their own river activities and #189RiverBasins, #JomConnect and #(theRiverName). We are targeting 189 entries by 31 December 2020. Despite of frequent devastating news of river pollution in the country in this pandemic-hit year, we believe our fellow Malaysians do love and enjoy our rivers and we should shout it loud! Why 189? 189 is the number of river basins in the whole Malaysia, while river basins are where most of us live in. Let’s show our joy being with the rivers and appreciate our living space in the 189 river basins in Malaysia this December.

As leo tolstoy puts it, “everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” change begins within and it begins from you. This session is about sharing life experiences, taking the first step towards personal change and striving for continued excellence instead of the illusion of perfection. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, what you do, what your skin color is, what your beliefs are, as long as you’re human, you have a story that others can learn from, and you too can learn from the stories of others. I strive to lead by example; so i’ll share my own life story and green journey towards a sustainable future. i aspire to inspire you to be the seed of change and with that, i cordially invite you to share your story too 🙂

Activity Name: Chit Mal: Sexuality Education in Myanmar
YSEALI Theme: Education
Description: In Myanmar, there is currently a lack of comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) in the formal school curriculum. The rapid technological advancement has also made the circulation of unregulated content related to sexuality more prevalent online. With many young and minor users on social media platforms with minimal censorship, my team and I hope to promote awareness among the Burmese adolescents aged 13 to 18 years old about sexuality education, helping to guide them in the right direction. We will be covering topics ranging from reproductive organs, puberty and menstrual hygiene to practising safe sex, developing positive self-identity and cultivating healthy relationships. The topics will be carefully selected and will cater to our audience depending on their specific age groups. Throughout the month of December, we will be conducting Zoom sessions every week, covering a different topic related to sexuality for each session. We will also be posting appropriate and relevant content on our Facebook page which will primarily be used for the marketing of our campaign and promoting awareness. Given the sensitive nature of such topics, we will consult and work together with experts and doctors to ensure the accuracy of the information we are disseminating. We will also make sure to have received consent from parents before carrying out the sessions. Through these sessions, we hope to empower and educate the Burmese youth to make informed and responsible decisions on matters regarding sexuality.

(P.S. Our Facebook page has not been designed properly yet. Hence, you may not see much when you visit our link right away. We will have content uploaded in about 7-10 days’ time. Thank you for your understanding.)

Nudge Theory is a concept in behavioral economics where you indirectly give suggestions to influence one’s behavior and decision-making. This theory has been widely practiced by many politicians, healthcare professionals, and even businesses to influence their audiences’ behavior. This theory will be very useful and effective for our local public officials to incorporate into their campaigns and activities for their LGU.

Activity Name: Building Gotong Royong, Fostering Bayanihan: Digital Tools for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Action
YSEALI Theme: Civic Engagement
Description: It is often said that information is the most important resource during a disaster. In the Philippines and Indonesia, extreme weather events have been occurring at greater frequencies which place urban and rural infrastructures under increasing strain. This entails that real-time information is critical for timely and informed decision to minimize loss and improve safety. In this context, digital media networks have also provided new channels through which residents are able to distribute real-time information which allow people to self-organize in times of disasters. As the two of the biggest social media users in terms of time spent online, Indonesian and Filipino residents actively use their social media networks to gather and share information to their own communities about rising flood waters and available resources.

The current pandemic has also amplified the role of digital platforms in advocating for climate justice. In September 2020, youth activists from Indonesia and the Philippines joined 3, 500 virtual protests across 150 countries. As such, digital platforms have provided an opportunity to maximize the reach of their call of millions of Filipino and Indonesian citizens who are both known for their fondness for social media. In light of these contexts, this virtual discussion-workshop seeks to answer the following questions: How can we register the participation of residents on social media into a meaningful framework that supports actionable responses, by filtering through the posts, tweets, and messages on social media in order to get critical, verified, geo-tagged situational information to agencies that have the capacity to respond? How can young people use digital media to further mobilize collective action and support for climate justice?

Drawing from Indonesia’s notion of “gotong-royong” and the Philippine spirit of “bayanihan” this virtual discussion-workshop aims to highlight examples of how social media and digital humanitarian platforms can be used to strengthen the community-based disaster response and advocate for climate justice. This event will feature Yayasan Peta Bencana’s commitment in promoting and supporting mutual aid through social media-powered and community-based disaster risk reduction and management platforms. With La Niña conditions expected to continue, heavy rainfall is expected throughout the region over the next few months. We encourage youth from the Philippines and Indonesia to continue sharing critical information to help their neighbors, government agencies, and emergency responders in times of disaster events.

Organization Partner: Yayasan Peta Bencana (Disaster Map Foundation) is a Southeast Asian non-profit humanitarian organization, developing open source platforms for real-time crowd-sourced hazard mapping. The foundation runs the award-winning project, PetaBencana.id; a free web-based platform that harnesses the use of social media during emergency events to gather confirmed on-the-ground updates from residents, and displays these reports alongside government agency validations on a publicly accessible map. Since its debut in 2013, the platform has been used by millions of resident users to make time-critical decisions about safety and navigation during emergency events; it has also been adopted by the Indonesian National Emergency Management Agency (BNPB) to monitor disaster events, improve response times, and share time-critical emergency information with residents. It was awarded the 2019 UN Public Service Award for ensuring integrated approaches for disaster management in public sector institutions. Following the success of the platform in Indonesia, Yayasan Peta Bencana is supporting the development and implementation of Mapakalamidad.ph; a crowd-based and social media-powered logistics platform capable of collecting, organizing, and disseminating real-time flood information from both formal and informal sources in the Philippines. The platform harnesses the use of social media to crowdsource disaster information from residents on-the-ground, who often have the most up-to-date information, and displays this information on a live web-based map. MapaKalamidad.ph is a part of the USAID DisasterAWARE Program for ASEAN Regional and National Capacity Development for Hazard Monitoring. As a component of the Pacific Disaster Center’s PhilAWARE program, it has been made possible through collaboration with project partners including the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team; our implementing partners at the Office of Civil Defense, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Pampanga Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office; and our data partners include Twitter and Mapbox.

Description: The Community Engagement Program for Basic Sectors (CEPBS) forms part of the (Zamboanga) City Government’s thrust towards transparency and people participation. Adopted from the Community Engagement University Program of the City Government of Kansas City Missouri, USA, the CEPBS was introduced to the LGU by EnP Jessie Christopher B Lapinid as part of his re-entry action plan for the 2016 Professional Fellows Program.

The City Government of Zamboanga is the main implementing party of the program. In this session on “Government Service in the New Normal”, the United States Government Alumni Association (USGAA) ZAMBASULTA joins as a partner organization in cognizance of the YSEALI YOUnified community service initiative. USGAA shall assist in providing resource persons, invitations, and information dissemination. The City Government of Zamboanga shall take care of documentation, follow-ups, secretariat support, technical support, and other arrangements.
First implemented in 2018, the CEPBS aims to provide an avenue for ordinary citizens to understand the city government and the various services it offers. It pursues the constitutional mandate of upholding the right of the people and their organizations for effective and meaningful participation in all levels of decision-making by providing an opportunity for knowledge exchange. For the December 11, 2020 session, the following are the specific objectives:

1. Give the public an understanding of the New Normal policies implemented by some government instrumentalities (e.g. DepEd, GAD, CPDO);
2. Reinforce the trust in the government by providing accurate information on COVID-19 and the minimum public health standards;
3. Open conversation on the struggles endured by clients and workers in navigating New Normal Policies; and

Problem Statement Since the Government of Timor-Leste Implemented state of emergency on March 28 due to the Covid-19 Pandemics, restrictions on movement and social distancing have affected the migration of people into the country, borders have been closed and the government limited the operations by reducing the operations hours. Nowadays, it only opens for 3 hours (9:00-12:00 AM) once in a week which is in every Wednesday and as per regulations, those people who are coming in are directly going into the quarantine place that have prepared by the Government. The objective is to keep preventing community transmission. The main problem is since these regulations has been issued some of people still has courage to coming into Timor-Leste illegally, lately Oct 15, again PNTL captured 14 People. This illegal movement has high risk for virus transmission into the country Consider Indonesia has a high number of people who are infected by the covid-19. This action caused by three major factors: no traveling documents/expired, border limited operations as well as less awareness of the importance of the quarantine and lack of information on quarantine life. As the result, they are worried and less encouragement and try to avoid going into the quarantine because they are thinking that the quarantine clinical treatment would be strictly and the days will be boring. IV. Purpose and Objective COVID-19 is a pandemic and a national issue, to control it we need a good collaboration and participation from all parties, both government, international agencies and community. Accordingly, this program is our small movement for Covid-19 spreads prevention. About YSEALI YOUnified

YOUnified is an annual community service campaign held around December 3rd to commemorate YSEALI’s anniversary and celebrate the power and potential of our YSEALI members. YOUnified combines the words YOUTH and UNIFIED to demonstrate YSEALI members’ ingenuity in creating solutions to shared community and regional challenges in one campaign. In 2017, YOUnified mobilized 11,000 young people in 10 ASEAN countries around 120 community projects and the momentum will continue in 2018.

How to Organize Your Own YOUnified Community Service Event

During the month of December, we want you to join forces to demonstrate the power of Youth Unified to create a positive impact through community service across Southeast Asia. Examples of community service events include picking up trash at a local park or beach, raising awareness at a local school about important issues for your community, volunteering to help at a local NGO, planting trees, or mentoring young students on the importance of leadership and civic engagement.
