YSEALI members are making a difference. In the coming weeks, we will feature young leaders across the ASEAN region who have participated in YSEALI programs and show how joining this community has helped them grow professionally and personally.
Vanida Luangthepxayavong, 26
National University of Laos
Acting Head of English and IT Division, Public Works and Transport Training Centre, Ministry of Public Works and Transport
Vanida Luangthepxayavong has “traveled to almost every province in Laos” since she started working for the Laotian Ministry of Public Works and Transport. Her job has taken her through the country’s forested mountains and lush river valleys to train other government employees in a wide variety of areas from road maintenance to environmental protection and English. She feels gratified that “my work gives an important impact to people in my country and communities” by preparing those who are directly involved in policy making.
What Vanida didn’t expect was the challenge of training colleagues much older than her. She says she has to prepare her lessons very well and use critical thinking skills “to motivate them to learn or believe me.” Luckily she has some extra help. Through YSEALI, she has been learning about project management and team building, which she uses in her work every day.
Vanida’s tips for success:
- Discover what you like and follow your dream.
- Think more about how you can make a positive difference than about how much you can earn.
- Set clear goals and make achievable plans.
