YSEALI members are making a difference. In the coming weeks, we will feature young leaders across the ASEAN region who have participated in YSEALI programs and show how joining this community has helped them grow professionally and personally.
Rithy Thul, 28
Rithy Thul has always been curious and motivated to make things better. As a boy in Cambodia, he learned how to better care for livestock. Later, he spent his savings to clean up pollution in his village to help improve the quality of life there.
Today, Thul, 28, has gone national, mentoring young people from all over Cambodia to help them develop their business ideas.
In 2011 Thul launched SmallWorld, a collaborative space where aspiring business owners can work on their startup enterprises. Thul and his team help others get their products and services ready for market.
SmallWorld works with 13 startup enterprises. “I was surprised to learn that business and leadership could be such fun,” Thul said.
The people Thul mentors inspire him to pursue his own goals.
“We hope to transform our neighborhood into a startup community, offering a home to hundreds of more startups in the future with a focus on responsible business practices and a healthy environment,” he said. He already incorporates ethics into his frequent business lessons.
Thul advises would-be business owners to think of education as a lifelong endeavor.
“Never stop educating yourself,” he said.
