U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel discussed military cooperation in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR) and other regional security issues with ASEAN Defense Ministers and the ASEAN Secretary-General Le Luong Minh. All ten ASEAN Member States participated and noted the important role military assets play in responding to natural disasters in the disaster prone Asia-Pacific region. USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah facilitated the HA/DR roundtable discussion, which emphasized civilian-military cooperation in crisis situations.
ASEAN Defense Ministers and the Secretary-General interacted with various U.S. government leadership, including Secretary Hagel and his wife Lilibet, Governor of Hawaii Neil Abercrombie, and the commander of all U.S. military forces in the Pacific region, Admiral Samuel Locklear. In addition, the visitors visited the USS ANCHORAGE, an amphibious transport ship prepared to demonstrate U.S. Navy and Marine Corps capabilities in HA/DR operations, including the CV-22 Osprey vertical takeoff-and-landing aircraft. They also got up close and personal to other U.S. military aircraft: the C-17 Globemaster cargo aircraft, which can deliver HA/DR supplies under austere conditions; the P-3 Orion U.S. Navy maritime surveillance aircraft, which can conduct search-and-rescue operations; a U.S. Coast Guard C-130 maritime patrol aircraft; and, various U.S. Army and Coast Guard helicopters; which can conduct both supply delivery and search-and-rescue tasks.
