JAKARTA – The ASEAN Secretariat and U.S. Mission to ASEAN (USASEAN) co-hosted a friendly gathering of the ASEAN Secretariat staff and Jakarta-based diplomatic community on March 10, 2011. The ASEAN Secretariat, according to ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, was not only a venue to hold official meetings, but was a space to accommodate people-to-people contact and cultural activities. “It is a place where people can meet, discuss and share their aspirations for ASEAN,” Dr. Surin said.

Co-host and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy, Theodore Osius said the gathering highlighted the U.S.’s assistance to ASEAN and support for strengthening the ASEAN identity.

Representing the Chair of ASEAN, the Director-General for ASEAN Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Djauhari Oratmangun, said the ASEAN Secretariat has contributed to the appeal of Jakarta and should be a source of pride for Jakartans.

The evening featured performances by the ASEAN Secretariat’s and USASEAN’s own musical talents, as well as traditional dances and folk music.
