JAKARTA, APRIL 30 – The Human Rights Resource Centre (HRRC) launched its inaugural study on the Rule of Law in the ASEAN Region with a conference attended by civil society members, government officials from Indonesia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Canada.
Newly-arrived U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN David L. Carden opened the conference by reiterating longstanding U.S. support for human rights in the region. He further congratulated the Centre on the completion of the study. Ambassador Carden emphasized the importance of human rights and good governance in building an integrated ASEAN Community.
The release of HRRC’s Study on the Rule of Law in the ASEAN Region marked the culmination of the HRRC’s very first project. The Centre, launched in October 2010, has received financial support from the ASEAN-U.S. Technical Assistance and Training Facility, a joint project of USAID and the U.S. Department of State, the Swiss Government, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), and the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Jakarta.
