Ambassador Carden Speaks on U.S.-ASEAN Relations at ISEAS

Singapore – Ambassador Carden delivered the inaugural lecture at The Institute of South East Asian Studies (ISEAS) ASEAN Studies Center in Singapore today.  The new lecture series focuses on Dialogue Partner Relations in ASEAN.  Former ASEC Secretary General Rodolfo Severino hosted the event, which included audience members from think tanks, the diplomatic corps, consultancy firms, and media outlets.  Ambassador Carden described U.S.-ASEAN relations and U.S. regional engagement, specifically discussing the rebalance, the upcoming EAS, Dialogue Partner coordination in support of Myanmar’s ASEAN Chairmanship year, regional security architecture, and ASEAN institutional capacity.  Discussion also covered ASEAN centrality and solidarity, the potential expansion of ASEAN to include Timor-Leste, and the potential for accession of the EU to the EAS.  Later this year, the ISEAS series will host lectures by Ambassadors to ASEAN from Japan, ROK, and China.
